Crystal Pineapple Isopods (Cristarmadillidium muricatum) are a small, visually striking species native to Spain, recognised for their spiky texture and pale orange‑to‑peach colouring that gives them a pineapple‑like appearance. Adults typically reach around 6–7 mm in length and require stable, carefully maintained conditions to thrive in captivity.
They feed primarily on decaying wood, leaf litter, and lichen, with calcium sources such as limestone or cuttlebone essential for proper exoskeleton development. Temperatures between 18–26°C suit them well, and like many Spanish species, they prefer lower humidity levels. Good ventilation is important to prevent excess moisture and maintain the dry‑leaning conditions they naturally favour.
A suitable substrate includes organic soil, flake soil, rotting wood, sphagnum moss, and leaf litter, with cork bark and hardwood pieces providing shelter and surface area. A 3‑litre tub is adequate for individual specimens, while larger tubs are recommended for growing colonies to ensure stability and reduce stress. Crystal Pineapple Isopods are sensitive to environmental fluctuations, so a consistent, well‑ventilated setup is key to long‑term success.
Shipped with all life stages for the best start for a strong colony.
